What do layoffs after an earnings call mean?

I know very little about the stock market and related strategy.

I am assuming layoffs prior to an earnings call mean they are trimming long term expenses to boost bottom line. But what about layoffs after an earnings call? Would this mean that had a good quarter but expect a downturn and are reducing costs?

I have no clue.
