I haven't seen much discussion about either of these companies or this proposed merger in particular on this sub, so I wanted to bring the discussion forward.
I, personally, believe that regulators will eventually approve the merger. With the combined market cap of Capital One and Discover the company will still be worth much less than many of its "big bank" competitors. Notably it would still be worth less than half that of its most direct competitor, AMEX.
I think there is significant value in Capital One gaining access its own payment network and with the combined resources of both companies it may be able to slowly eat into the market share of Visa/Mastercard.
