Reasons for substantial shareholder to give shares to family members?

One of the stocks I am looking at purchasing states that a substantial shareholder passed on a substantial amount of shares to family members. Curious what the usual reasons are for these? Initially I thought it was because they expect stocks to go up and to avoid high tax amounts when they do sell, but I suppose it could also be the case that these family members can sell stock without being listed as "insider trading" and making everyone nervous about the stock?

I am a newbie, what at are some other reasons?
