New to semi active investing, looking for conceptual advice

I have been fairly passive over the course of my life so far with investing and saving. Just putting away 15% or so into ira/401k. Last year I started an experiment with recurring small amount investments daily.

Now im looking to increase that to around 5k annually until I get a better grasp of free cash.

My question is, is it better to spread that amount between stocks/etfs/etc even if I'm not getting full shares or should I be focusing that cash on 1 or 2 instead?

edit to clarify

let's say I've got 8 etfs/stocks/etc that I've looked at and like overall. Is it better practice to choose a top 1-3, risk ignored, or spread out the relatively low current annual investment amount between the 8? Or does it really not matter there are ups and downs to both but since we're not working in millions, the long term isn't significantly different.

I've been reading and trying to grasp investing, but my peers/family aren't those guys so I'm trying to avoid major missteps while at least starting sound annual things
