First investor advice

Hi community,

A complete rookie when it comes to the stock market. I have started out simple by learning something I didn't have a clue about.

ETFs, Index funds, bonds etc.

I'm approaching investing from a cautious but excited standpoint and making sure not to invest outside my means.

With this in mind, I have been watching quite a few YouTube videos on what long term investors tend to gravitate towards. All the while keeping an open mind and using my own brain, as I'm aware no one has a crystal ball.

Banks offer next to nothing in the way of interest. As a result, in order to make any significant returns you already need significant capital. So I'm not going to be locking money up in a term deposit.

I guess my question is for all the seasoned investors out there, who have learned the hard lessons (which I know I can't avoid, just looking for some guidance). If I wanted to invest $5000 today and take my first step, what should I invest it in? and more importantly, why?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
