Are you taxed for your annual profit, or taxed each time you close a profitable trade?

I don’t know why this has been confusing me lately. I’m not sure which is right.

When I make a trade and make $20,000, do I get capital gains tax against that 20k? Or, if I lose $10,000 on the next trade and end the year off with a total of $10,000 profit,, I get taxed on the $10,000?

Hopefully that’s clear. Could someone confirm which is the truth?
